Selective Laser melting (SLM) is an additive metals manufacturing technology with a presence in medical Orthopaedics and Dental through to Aerospace and high technology engineering and electronics sectors.
The process uses a high powered laser to fuse fine metal powders together layer by layer direct from CAD data to create functional metal parts. After each layer a powder recoater system deposits a fresh layer of powder in thicknesses ranging from 20 to 100 microns. The system uses commercially available gas atomised metallic powders to produce fully dense metal parts in materials including Titanium, Stainless Steel, Cobalt Chrome and Tool Steel.

The MTT Range comprises three machines; the SLM125, SLM250 and SLM250HL.
The standard range includes the SLM125 and SLM250 and both machines feature vacuum evacuation followed by high purity argon gas in order to create a high quality atmosphere, crucial when building in reactive materials such as Titanium, where oxygen content must be minimised. Both machines feature fully sealed and welded chambers contributing to robustness and ultra low gas consumption. The SLM125 features a removable powder cassette, perfect for materials changeover or materials development, both also feature MTT's state of the art powder handling and safe change filter system with minimal user contact with materials. Both machines have been designed with the tool room or factory floor in mind with a simple touch screen user interface and robust construction. All file and data preparation is done off line in an office environment.
The SLM250HL is primarily designed as a research tool and features the ability to blend materials and to adapt processing parameters. It is more similar in architecture to the previous range of machines with additional features and an updated user interface with a wider range of laser options. The option of an integrated sieving station is also available on the HL platform, further enhancing the system. The machine uses high purity argon gas to create a controlled build atmosphere.
